What is Effective Education?

Evaluations Before and After

Teachers were evaluated long before the Great Teachers and Leaders Law passed in Colorado, but this law creates consistent standards for frequency, data used, and the outcomes of these evaluations.

Evaluations before SB 191 Evaluations after SB 191
  • Probationary teachers are evaluated every year for their first three years based on observation by principal; non-probationary teachers are evaluated once every three years based on observation by principal

  • All teachers are evaluated every year based on multiple factors, including student growth

  • Teachers receive non-probationary status on their first day of their fourth years
  • Teachers earn non-probationary status when they have demonstrated effectiveness for three years in a row
  • Once you have earned non-probationary status, it is extremely difficult to lose it

  • Once you have earned non-probationary status, the only way you can lose it is by being rated ineffective for two years in a row
